Our post-Covid reality continues to include doing many things at home. Movie theatres are open where we live, but nothing has drawn us to them. Although I've binged a host of shows, it is more satisfying for me to watch a movie. Lately I've reflected on which movies are overdue for a rewatch. My personal list includes:
The Big Lebowski- The Coen brothers' iconic film featuring Jeff Bridges' The Dude simply does not get old. The opening sequence of the Dude grocery shopping for half and half in his bathrobe, boxers and sandals is seared in my memory. The cast is absolutely stellar. I might even argue that it is my favorite performance by John Goodman.
Clerks- This single location, black and white film which gifts us the abhorrent Jay and Silent Bob is hilarious, and deeply inappropriate. Clerks deftly captures 90's suburban malaise.
Better Off Dead- Before Say Anything, John Cusack was Lane Meyer, a quirky, self-doubting, unlucky and lovelorn teen who would do anything to win back his ex-girlfriend, Beth. This has 80's nostalgia, mortifying family encounters, high school awkwardness and a downhill ski montage.
Up- A kid's movie that tackles miscarriage, infertility, financial security, death and grief and is somehow still charming and brilliant.
Fight Club- Come for Brad Pitt shirtless, stay for a twisted and disturbing tale of alienation and rebellion.
